Prevention is better than cure for Staff Management

Many clients come to me with staffing issues in their Business. Establishing & growing a Small Business is full on to say the least.

At some point along the line, staff are required. While this is fabulous, many Business Owners are unsure how to take this next step and cultivate a climate which allows their staff to shine.

It’s common for Business Owners to love their business so much that it’s hard to handover tasks. It can also be difficult to make time to set up the necessary systems and processes properly to allow a solid infrastructure to operate effectively.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

It’s best not to wait until there are staffing issues to come and see me - prevention is always better than cure.

Below are 7 tips for Managing your Team Effectively:

1. Clear Communication

Projects, goals & deadlines are essential to keep your business running smoothly. Ensure all communication is clear and concise.

If there is ever an issue, address it quickly so it doesn’t spiral into something messy and difficult. Clear communication between team members will always win!

2. Cultivate positive relationships

Spend time getting to know your team members. Quite often you’ll need to adapt your communication style and potentially work style to suit your team & so they’ll perform their best and also enjoy their job.

Building rapport and great relationships is essential for also building a great working environment.

3. Assert authority

A good leader needs to be liked by their staff however also respected. Asserting authority when needed and making critical decisions is key to being a respected leader.

4. Match jobs to the right team members

Getting to know your staff’s strengths and weaknesses will help you pair work accordingly. It is always better when someone is working on something they enjoy. Delegating effectively will have a significant impact on the productivity of your teamwork.

6. Address conflict

Hurdles and conflict is part of the inevitable. I always say that it’s important to address these situations straight away. It’s much easier to overcome when nipped in the bud and with clear communication.

7. Be the example

Staff look to their leader for guidance & inspiration. It’s up to you to fill this role and become a good example. If you expect them to be professional and really commit to their work, it’s vital that you do so yourself.

Ensure that you are doing your job well, continuing to develop your career and support your team in doing so too.
