Wild Soapnuts
Souced from small communities in the Himalayan foothills where there are fair trade practices.
The nuts are 'wild harvested' and not farmed, and are a sustainable resource. Wild Soapnuts are certified organic.
Soapnuts are the outside of a macadamia-sized berry, which is cracked open and dried in the sun, producing a dark golden shell.
These shells, known as 'soapnuts', 'washnuts' or 'soapberries' can be placed into your washing machine instead of detergent and fabric softener, leaving your clothes clean, soft and scent free.
The shells contain a very high percentage of saponins (Mother Natrure's soap), a surfacant, which removes dirt and oils from fabric when dispersed in water.
Wild Soapnuts do not use sewn cotton bags for the soapnuts. Rather, net bags are provided with the nuts, as there is anecdotal evidence that the Soapnuts do not work as well in bags as the nets. There is also concern for the posibillity for child labour and sweatshop conditions.
Soapnuts can also be used for:
- laundry detergent
- hand and body wash
- conditioning shampoo
- general purpose cleaner
- car wash
- pet wash
- vegetable wash
- carpet and upholstery cleaner.....
